Richards' 2011 Trip Report
Austin to South Central Colorado
Well, where to start?? We finally finished completion of our patio extension and were anxious to take off but still had a couple of very important dates on the calendar. First was July 4th with the kids and grandkids ... plus son Uncle John was coming in to get his first visit with his second nephew (Travis). We had a great time in Dallas, came back to Spicewood, and then went to the Davis Cup tennis match between Spain and the U.S. for 3 days (great matches but we came up on the losing side). The next day (Monday) we picked up the trailer, packed it up and headed out on Tuesday morning. The drought was very evident as we drove up toward Lubbock ... huge live oaks are stressed or dying, the fields were mostly dirt as the grass has completely dried up, farmers didn't even plant because of lack of moisture (the only green was irragated land) ... we've never seen it so bad. Even some of the cedars were brown and dying. We got into Lubbock, got connected, and immediately had a dust storm followed by a rain storm come through. The effect of all this is that is was raining mud! Our clean trailer and truck were converted to a West Texas dark red brown color. Then the next day we went through scattered rain storms in New Mexico on the way to Walsenburg, Colorado. Around Raton Pass we drove through the after effects of the fires in Northern N.M around that area ... unbelievable. Our third day we ended up in a little RV park on the northern side of the San Luis Valley .. very quiet and off the road with internet and phone service. The first day there I started to work on the web site and realized I had not transfered some html files from the old laptop ... no problem, I'd just download them from the server?? Bad mistake .. I hit a wrong command and ended up downloading a bunch of other file info from the server which the notebook did not like at all! Net result ... no computer functionality and my backup was at the house in Spicewood. Luckily we had our iPad so we weren't totally dead ... plus our neighbor saved us by getting my backup external drive and mailing it to us in Gunnison where we picked it up and restored the notebook to it's original condition. It's nice to have it all working again! So I'm not going to try the server download again ... I'm just going to post this on a separate link which will be in my email. It's the first time I've actually hosed up my notebook that I couldn't resolve the issue without resorting to the whole system restore from a backup thing. So the message is the same, backing up your system can save your butt. Anyway, my apologies for the long winded intro ... as usual, we hope you enjoy the site as much as we enjoy sharing our experiences. Even though we have a great time when we are away, we always look forward to coming back to Texas and visiting with friends and family.
So, one picture of Erwin Center where the Davis Cup was held. We really enjoyed the enthusiasim of the crowd and the tennis effort and skill was top quality ... a very entertaining experience.
Yep, it's good to be back in Colorado. This is one of our "off road" trips ... fairly mild but enjoyable to be out again.
Back in the mountains .. this is on the road to Bonanza .. a popular ATV area
This is our camp site at Buffalo Gap, just below North Cochetopa Pass on a little known road. 9100 feet up .. mild days in the 70's and nights in the mid 40's. Just love it.
An old mining mill that was abandoned in the early 1900's. Interesting to nose around.
I said it was a popular ATV area ... the dust stirred up by these guys and the dirt bikes was incredible. Did I say anything about how I felt about these guys?? Even the dogs were outfitted for the dust (masks & breathing masks)
At the top of the pass. Wildflowers are way past peak but the views are still worthwhile. We had a picnic up here.
Another off road area on our way up to a pass.
Lake Irwin ... 10,100 feet up. We went up to look at camping spots but settled on another (equally gorgeous) location .. to be in the next update.
A rufous hummingbird ... the king of the hummingbird world ... they defend the feeder like they own it .. chasing others away ... laying in wait for an unsuspecting hummer to come to the feeder and then chasing them off.
